Alexandra Motiu
Alexandra Motiu makes art under the pseudonym Moatzart, a Brighton based printmaker and illustrator with a fine arts background, working with original printmaking techniques, mainly relief, wood engraving, with experience in etching, metal engraving and monotype.
Her work has surreal qualities and humour, with an old masters' feel. She aims to make hauntingly beautiful work that will stay with the viewer for a long time. She enjoys busy compositions with complex stories, which she builds up like a collage. Her works are often rooted in myth and folklore.
Ultimately, her main inspiration is people, portraiture being at the root of all her prints, from where their stories often develop.
After a BA hons degree in Fine Art Critical Practice from Brighton, and an MA in Illustration from Camberwell College at University of the Arts London, Alexandra's notable projects are the illustrated poetry book Effigies by Ricardo Reveron Blanco, and a commission of exclusive prints for Fabrica Gallery in Brighton. Her work has been in international exhibitions in the past three years, throughout Europe and the US, and is permanently at IO Gallery in Brighton, and here at Greenwich Printmakers. She has amassed a decent following online, sharing the process of making original prints, which she is passionate about preserving.
